Shadows are Ageless

Shadows are ageless. These that we throw
this evening on our walk are those we threw
when first we walked — ‘walked out’ — together. Now, as then,
the setting sun exaggerates our differences
but silhouettes forgive, ignore the work of time.
And they do well, in that, whatever mirrors,
disappointing flatterers, may say,
this simple light effect maintains the greater truth:
black on a ground of gold, as constant as our hearts.
