Portovenere

After Eugenio Montale — Portovenere

There, where the Triton rides ashore
from waves which lap and curl
across a Christian temple’s floor
and each new hour is old,
our every doubt’s a little girl
whose friendly hand we hold.

Our solid selves — our voice, our face —
lose form and substance there.
Our origins are in this place
and only fools resist,
until you leave and, going, wear
the face you briefly missed.

Eugenio Montale — Portovenere

Là fuoresce il Tritone
dai flutti che lambiscono
le soglie d’un cristiano
tempio, ed ogni ora prossima
è antica. Ogni dubbiezza
si conduce per mano
come una fanciulletta amica.

Là non è chi si guardi
o stia di sé in ascolto.
Quivi sei alle origini
e decidere è stolto:
ripartirai più tardi
per assumere un volto.
