She who had Loved Horses

She who had loved horses knew her time had come
and now, as she lay dying, the last two in her keeping,
who would outlive her, as they knew, came sidling
up the back field, as they never did, to the window to stand
and attend her spirit until it leapt beyond
them and the place and took its straight line to the sun.
